Published in 1972, "Writer Of Songs" by Harvey Andrews is a collection of protest songs, social comment and love songs. This was the earliest kind of music that struck a chord with my developing sense of the real world. It's like going back to being a 15 year old again - mixed feelings about that!
Best remembered is "The Soldier", the story of a young British soldier who saved the lives of civilians in Northern Ireland by lying down on a bomb thrown into a railway station. Also, "Hey Sandy", about a student shot by the National Guard at a University protest in America in the early 70s. And "Soap Opera", about a teacher whose career is ruined despite being cleared of molesting a young girl.
